How to Program a DirectTV Remote for an HD Receiver

How to Program a DirectTV Remote for an HD Receiver thumbnail
Program your DirecTV remote for the HD receiver.

When you sign up for DirecTV, you have several options regarding the level of programming and receiver quality. If you rent a DirecTV HD receiver or DVR you will also receive a remote to control it. The remote should work automatically when you set up the satellite and receiver. Most of the problems come from weak batteries or a blocked path between the remote and the sensor on the receiver. If you are using a different remote or can't get your old one to sync correctly, you can re-sync the two devices.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn on the DirecTV HD receiver and your TV, and be sure the TV is set at the correct channel (either 3 or 4).

    • 2

Be sure new batteries are placed in the remote, and set the mode switch on your remote to "DirecTV."

    • 3

Press and hold either the "DSS," "SAT" or "DIRECTV" button on the remote. The remote will run a test to sync with the HD receiver.

    • 4

Press "Start" on the receiver to turn it back on. When it starts up again, the HD receiver and remote will be synced together.

Tips & Warnings

  • Navigate the DirecTV menu using the buttons on the front of your receiver. If you can do this, then there is a problem with your remote and you may need a replacement. Call DirecTV at 800–531–5000.
