How to Become a Fashion Designer When You Are a Kid
If you're creative and love fashion, consider becoming a fashion designer. You don't have to wait to be an adult to start designing. Russian teenager Kira Plastinina was only 15 when she started designing clothing. Now there are dozens of Kira Plastinina boutiques around the world, and celebrities are often seen wearing her pieces.

Get familiar with other collections. Familiarize yourself with other designers' collections. You can do this by viewing present and past collections of famous designers at Style.com. The site has slide shows from the fall and spring collections that have been shown on the New York runways. Getting familiar with other designers' collections will help build your own taste level for your collection. You'll learn what you like and don't like and get a better understanding of why color and fabric choices are so important.
-
2
Sketch ideas in a notebook. Start sketching designs in a notebook. Most fashion designers get inspiration for their collections by sketching ideas in a notebook. Take your notebook with you wherever you go; you never know when you might have an idea for a new garment.

3
Spend time at a fabric store. Visit a fabric store. Have your parents take you to your local fabric store. Spend time touching and examining the various fabrics. This is an important step for a child designer. You'll get a sense of what textures and colors you like and want to use in your garments. You can take swatches (small pieces of the fabric) home with you to place in your sketchbook next to the designs you want to use the fabric in.
-
4
Learn how to sew. Learn how to sew. Some designers don't actually sew their own pieces. They may outsource their designs to someone else to sew. However, getting a basic knowledge of sewing is important to understand how a garment is constructed. Learning how to sew will also give you the ability to make your own creations anytime you want. You can practice sewing with simple patterns you can buy at a fabric store. Eventually, you'll be able to sew your own garments.

5
Get an internship. Get an internship. Even when you're still a kid, you can spend time shadowing a professional designer. If you're a little older, and in high school, you can even spend a few hours a week interning with a designer. To find an internship, ask your school counselor for help or get in contact with a local magazine or newspaper in your area; the fashion editor there may be able to suggest a local designer for you.
