How to Open iPod Files in Windows

The Apple iPod mp3 player is really easy to transfer files to. Transferring files from the device is not so simple! The device's firmware is not set up to share information or to copy files to other device's like your computer. The only removal tool the iPod has is the "delete" feature in the iTunes software. Even when you double-click on the device itself in the "My Computer" folder you will not see any of your downloaded files.

  • Connect your iPod to your computer using the USB sync cable. If iTunes attempts to start, close the program.

  • Press the start menu at the bottom of your desktop.

  • Select the "My Computer" folder in your start menu.

  • Double-click on "My Computer" to open the folder and reveal your iPod device folder inside of it.

  • Double-click on your iPod device folder.

  • Click on the "Tools" menu at the top of the iPod device folder. Then select "Folder Options" from the Tools menu.

  • Click on the "View" tab.

  • Fill the circle next to "Show Hidden Files and Folders." Then select "Apply" and "OK" to save these options. A folder called the "iPod_Control" folder will then appear in your iPod device folder.

  • Double-click on the "iPod_Control" folder to reveal your file folders.

  • Double-click on the "Music" folder (this folder contains both audio and video files), the "Photos" folder, or the "Games_RO" folder to view the downloaded files inside.

  • Retrieve your files by right-clicking on the file, and selecting "Copy" from the drop-down menu. Then go to a folder on your computer where you want to save your copied file and right-click again and press "Paste."
