How to Open a Maytag Atlantis Dryer

Maytag manufactures both the Atlantis and the Neptune dryer. The only difference between these two dryers is the control console. The best way to service your dryer is to open the Maytag Atlantis cabinet. The cabinet on the Atlantis is an individual slope design. To completely open the cabinet, you must remove the control console, front panel and top of the dryer. Do not take the sides and the rear of the Atlantis apart.

Things You'll Need

  • Phillips-head screwdriver
  • Towel
  • Masking tape
  • Pencil
  • 5/16-inch socket wrench

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect the Maytag Atlantis power cord from the dryer electrical outlet.

    • 2

Remove the screws on the rear top edge of the control console with a Phillips-head screwdriver. Place a towel across the top of the dryer. Grab the top of the control console and roll the console forward, placing the console face down on the towel.

    • 3

Place small masking tape pieces on each of the wires connecting to the various components inside the control console. Write each wire's location on the masking tape with a pencil. Pull each wire away from its component with your fingers. Set the control console out of your way.

    • 4

Open the dryer door, and find the four retaining screws on the inside edge of the door opening. Remove the screws with a Phillips-head screwdriver. Close the dryer door, and grasp the sides of the front panel with your hands. Pull the front panel toward you to disengage the side clips. Place the front panel assembly out of your way.

    • 5

Locate the two screws that secure the top cover and hold down the brackets to the front shroud. Remove the screws with a 5/16-inch socket wrench. Remove the hold down brackets from the side of the dryer cabinet. Tilt the front of the top panel towards the rear of the dryer. The top panel will rest on hinges in this position.

    • 6

Find the screws that secure the front shroud to the Maytag Atlantis side panels. The front shroud is the supporting mechanism for the front of the dryer drum. Remove the screws with a Phillips-head screwdriver, and pull the shroud away from the dryer. The dryer is now fully open, and you can access all the working mechanisms.
