How to Upload a WP Theme to HostGator cPanel

There are many different themes available to use with WP. Some themes are free while others cost money. It can be confusing to install a new theme in any cPanel for someone who does not have web-site experience. Themes can be complex, but there are ways to install them easily.

Instructions

1. Download a zip program. A popular one that has a free evaluation version is WinZip. There are other programs available for free and for a flat rate. Zipping the files will make uploading to the Hostgator cPanel easier and most efficient.

2. Zip the theme folder. Right-click on the theme folder; go down to 'send to', then click on compressed (zipped folder). This will zip the whole theme folder so files do not manually have to be installed. The icon of the folder will change to show it has been zipped. When files are manually installed this could take up to an hour depending on how much content there is in the theme.

3. Open the Hostgator cPanel. Look for the file manager and choose the document root of the site that will get the WP theme. Double-click on wp-content, and then themes. This is the area where all of the word press themes are stored for that particular site.

4. Click the upload button. Browse for the theme folder that was zipped previously. Once the folder is uploaded and you are back at the directory there will the zipped file that was just uploaded. Highlight the folder and click the, 'Extract' icon.

5. Activate the theme in the WP admin area. Go to the appearance link on the left-hand side and click on themes. The new theme that was just uploaded to the wp-content folder should be there under available themes. Click on that theme, and then activate it.
