How to Create a .Gif Web Logo

Whether you're creating a logo for your website, event or social messaging chat room, choosing to work with a dynamic Graphics Interchange Format, or .GIF, file gives you options not allowed by other extensions such as .JPEGs or .BMPs. The main benefit of a .GIF file is its transparency; it is the only type of file extension that supports a clear background, which may be used to overlay your logo against any type of design, color or pattern. You can create .GIF web logos in a variety of software packages, such as Microsoft Paint, which comes standard on installations, and Adobe Photoshop.

Use tools in the "Tools" palette on the left side of the screen to draw logo elements such as lines and graphics with the "Shape," "Line" and "Paintbrush" tools. Choose colors from the "Color Picker," which is the top left box of the two overlapping boxes.

    • 8

Click the "Text" tool and note the new text toolbar that appears at the top of the page. Choose your font, weight, size and color, then click once on your document. The cursor changes to a blinking line; type your text.

    • 9

Use the "Move" tool, which looks like a black left-pointing arrow and cross, to push your text into place.

    • 10

Click "File," then choose "Save As." Name the file and choose a location to save it, then pull down the "Format" drop-down menu and select .GIF. Click the "Save" button.

Tips & Warnings

  • .GIF files also support "blinkies," which are images that appear to glitter and sparkle and logos that appear to move, run or scroll across the screen. They are the only types of files that allow this type of action without being a Flash movie file or other type of script.
