How to Create an HP Recovery Disk

Save

An HP Recovery Disk contains important installation and system files needed to restore your HP computer in the event of a system crash or hard drive failure. Keeping these files on external media prevents them from being lost if the computer itself becomes inoperable. Depending on your particular system, there may be multiple disks of information required.

Things You'll Need

  • Blank CD-Rs (up to 8)
  • Permanent marker
  • Click on "Start" on the Windows desktop. Click on "All Programs." Locate a folder titled "Hewlett-Packard" and click on it.

  • Double-click on "HP PC Recovery CD Creator" and wait for the program to load.

  • Click the "Continue" button on each screen that appears until you reach a screen that indicates how many CDs you will need for the backup.

  • Use the marker to label each blank CD. For example label every CD with "HP Recover Disk" followed by the disk number out of how many total disks (such as Disk 2 of 8).

  • Click "Yes" to continue and click it once more if prompted. Insert the first disk and click "OK."

  • Wait for a prompt to appear telling you to insert the next numbered disk. In some cases the CD drive door will open when the previous disk is completed. Insert the next disk and click "OK." Repeat this step until all disks are completed.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not eject the disks during the process, always wait for the prompt before inserting a new CD.
  • Allow the marker ink to dry completely before inserting a disk, wet ink can smear or damage the CD drive components.
