How to Connect a Router with a Firewall to a DSL Modem

A firewall is a program that is either on your computer or on a device attached to your computer that filters traffic coming and in and out of your computer's network, according to Microsoft. Many routers come with firewalls on them to help protect your home or office Internet connection from malicious intent. The firewall stands in the way of any traffic that might harm your computer so you can rest easy. The routers with firewalls have hardware firewalls so the firewalls are built into the routers.

Things You'll Need

• 2 Ethernet cables

Instructions

1. Plug in your router to the wall socket. Plug the Ethernet cable into your router's port and your DSL modem's "LAN" or "WLAN" port.

2. Plug the router into your computer's Ethernet port.

3. Open your Internet browser and go to the router's IP address. It will be in your router's manual.

4. Input a new password and name for your router. Set up any other security that came with your router on the website.

5. Unplug your router from the computer and turn on your computer's wireless capabilities if the router is wireless. If not, leave it plugged in.
