1
Mark the centerline of your door with a pencil if this is a new door. Measure the height of the door and divide by two. The result will be the centerline of the door. Place the Schlage door template over the center line and edge of the door. Mark the center of the holes you will need to cut with an awl. Place the awl on the center point on each hole in the template and tap it with a hammer. Remove the template from the door. If you are using an existing door, use the holes that are already in the door.

2
Drill the holes for the door knob into the door. Drill the hole in the edge of the door for the latch assembly.

3
Insert the latch assembly into the edge of the door and trace the outline of the plate onto the door edge. Remove the latch plate assembly and mortise the door edge with a wood chisel so that the latch plate will sit flush in the door.

4
Set the latch assembly into the hole in the door edge and secure it with two wood retaining screws.

5
Close the door until the latch bolt touches the inside jamb. Mark the center of the latch bolt onto the jamb with a pencil. Drill a hole on the inside jamb edge, centering the hole where the latch bolt will fit. Place the strike plate over the hole in the jamb edge and trace the outline with a pencil. Mortise the area with a chisel so the strike plate will sit flush in the jamb edge. Secure the strike plate to the door jamb edge with the retaining screws and screwdriver.

6
Insert the spindle of the keyed outside door knob into the hole in the latch assembly. Maneuver the door knob until it is flush against the outside of the door.
-
7
Align the inside door knob into the inside door hole and maneuver the open screw sleeves over the sleeves of the outside door handle within the door. Insert the two retaining screws into the faceplate of the inner door handle and turn it clockwise with a screwdriver to secure the two handle parts together.
