How to Record a DVD Movie to My Hard Drive
Since DVDs can get scratched and ruined, it can be useful to back up your movies by recording them to your hard drive as a video file. This is a process known as "ripping." Native software usually won't be able to handle this process, so your best bet is to download free software to handle this process for you. Among these are Format Factory, Xilisoft and AoA (see Resources for links).

Try Format Factory as a good free option for ripping your DVD. You can access this function under the "DVD" tab and it's fairly straightforward. The video quality may not be as high as in other paid versions, but for a quick and free option Format Factory is a good bet.

Use Xilisoft if you want higher quality, though the free version will only convert the first 5 minutes of your DVD to a video file--then you have to buy the full version (see the website for details). This software allows you to turn the DVD into many different video formats, compatible with iPod, Apple TV, iPhone and computer-based players such as Windows Media Player.

Download AoA for a DVD ripper that uses a spreadsheet type user interface. It shows you exactly how the steps to burn a DVD will work. You can convert the first 10 minutes of your DVD for free, then you have to purchase the full version of the product (see the website for details).
