How to Modify a Laser Light Pen

Laser light pens can be purchased legally from such diverse places as hobby shops and drugstores. The laser beam within inexpensive laser light pens has been deliberately adjusted to a weak setting, so as to compel you to buy a more expensive model. You can modify an inexpensive laser light pen by adjusting the screw that regulates its intensity. You will have to disassemble the laser light pen to modify it, but you will not need any experience with electronics, nor will you need to use a soldering iron.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Unscrew the battery cap from the back of the laser light pen. Put the battery cap down on the towel. Remove the batteries from inside of the battery compartment in the back of the laser light pen. Put the batteries down on the towel.

    • 2

Put the towel down on a table. Open the clamps of the table vise. Place the laser light pen between the clamps with the battery compartment end down. Close the clamps around the laser light pen to hold it securely.

    • 3

Grab the top of the laser light pen with the needle-nosed pliers. Twist the pliers to separate the top shell of the laser light pen from the back shell. Put the top shell of the laser light pen down on the towel.

    • 4

Remove the back shell of the laser light pen from the clamps and put it down on the towel with the silver screw that is on the now-exposed laser circuitry facing up.

    • 5

Insert the end of the Phillips jeweler's screwdriver into the silver screw. Turn the silver screw a full turn clockwise.

    • 6

Return the back shell of the laser light pen between the clamps of the table vise. Apply bonding glue around the rim of the front shell. Place the front shell back onto the back shell. Hold the front shell onto the back shell until the bonding glue grips the two. Let the bonding glue set for at least 24 hours.

    • 7

Remove the laser light pen from the clamps of the table vise. Put the batteries back into the battery compartment in the back of the laser light pen. Put the battery cap back onto the back of the laser light pen.

    • 8

Aim the laser light pen at a far wall. Depress the button on the laser light pen that you have modified to project a more powerful beam of laser light than it could before.

Tips & Warnings

  • Carry additional batteries because the laser light pen will go through them faster now that it has been modified.

  • Never aim a laser light pen at any living thing--the laser light is potentially harmful.
