How to Clean a Single Cup Coffee Maker

Water deposits, coffee residue and other grime accumulate in a single cup coffee maker over time. This buildup can leave your coffee tasting less than delicious. Coffee maker cleaning should be done at least once a month if your coffee maker is used regularly. This will remove residue, impurities and buildup to ensure that each cup of coffee tastes good.

Things You'll Need

  • White vinegar
  • Water
  • Rags
  • Dish soap
  • Fill the single cup coffee carafe with equal parts white vinegar and water. Pour the mixture into the reservoir of the coffee maker.

  • Turn the coffee maker on. Allow about half of the carafe to fill with the vinegar and water solution.

  • Turn the coffee maker off. Allow it to sit for about 15 minutes. Turn it back on and allow the rest of the vinegar and water solution to brew through to the carafe.

  • Discard the vinegar and water mixture from the carafe. Rinse out the carafe a few times with plain water.

  • Fill the carafe with plain water. Pour the water into the reservoir on the coffee maker.

  • Run the plain water through a complete brew cycle through the coffee maker. Run three cycles of plain water through the coffee maker to thoroughly rinse away any traces of the vinegar or any remaining residue.

  • Wash the carafe and filter basket in the sink with warm, soapy water. Rinse with plain water and dry thoroughly with a clean rag. If the carafe and filter are dishwasher safe, place them in the dishwasher for cleaning.

  • Wipe down the exterior of the coffee maker with a rag and soapy water. Make sure to wipe off the burner as this accumulates a lot of buildup. Go over the exterior of the coffee maker with a dry rag to remove any soap residue.
