How to Get a Sales Tax Exemption Number in Florida
In Florida, there are several different groups that are exempt from paying sales tax. To receive a certificate of exemption, you have to complete an application and submit the requested supporting evidence to prove that you meet the state's tax exemption guidelines.

Download Form DR-5, Application for Consumer's Certificate of Exemption, from the Florida Department of Revenue website.

Determine the exemption for which you are qualified. As of 2010, there were 18 different qualification categories, ranging from religious and political groups to nonprofit organizations and parent-teacher groups. Form DR-5 contains a list of all of the groups and the qualification guidelines for each.

Gather the requested supporting documentation. The required supporting evidence depends on the qualification category you are claiming. You can find a list of the documents you need for the exemption for which you believe you qualify on Form DR-5.

Complete the application attached to Form DR-5. The application asks you to identify the exemption category you believe you qualify for and for your name, organization name and address and other information about your organization's structure.

Submit your application and the supporting evidence to: Central Registration/Exemptions, Registration/Exemptions, Florida Department of Revenue, P.O. Box 6480, Tallahassee, FL 32314-6480.
