While a Windows Media Audio (WMA) file generally contains high-quality audio (good enough to listen to a song on), a MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) file contains instructions, not actual sound. Those instructions can play back a very basic version of a song, either using a computer or cell phone's internal synthesizer or using a MIDI-compatible instrument like a keyboard. Free software exists to convert WMA files into smaller, MIDI instructional files for embedding on websites or using as basic ringtones.

Innovative Music Systems Ensemble Edition

Step 1

Download and install the software (see Resource 1).

Step 2

Launch Innovative Music Systems Ensemble Edition.

Step 3

Click the New Project Wizard button (the left-most button in the top menu).

Step 4

Select the "My music is recorded as an MP3, WMA, or wave file" radio button and click "Next."

Step 5

Click the button with a file folder on it and navigate to the folder where your WMA file is located. Double-click the filename to select it, then click "Next."

Step 6

Follow the remaining wizard instructions based on your knowledge of the original WMA file. You will be asked if you can identify the instrument(s) in the original file, and if so, which instruments they are. If you're not sure, choose the option to automatically select the beat.

Step 7

Click "Finish" at the end of the wizard. Your MIDI file will be saved in the directory you specified in the wizard setup.
