How to Become a Food Stamp Retailer

Food stamps, which are now issued on cards similar to debit cards (EBT--Electronic Benefits Transfer), are the necessary form of payment for millions of Americans. You don't have to be a standard grocery store to accept food stamp payments, but you do need to be some type of food retailer. Accepting food stamps can mean an increase to your bottom line; it can also improve access to food for the needy in your community.

Instructions

    • 1

Request your application package by contacting the USDA Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program retailer hotline at 877-823-4369. The department's hours of operation are 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. Speak to a representative to request the retailer application package. The application should arrive within three business days.

If the office is closed when you call, leave a voice mail. Include your business name and address to have an application sent to you the following business day.

    • 2

Complete the application entirely. Double-check the information for accuracy. Make a copy of one of your operating licenses (health permit, local sales tax permit, etc.). Also make a copy of your driver's license and Social Security card. If you have a business partner, include a copy of his or her driver's license and Social Security card.

    • 3

Mail the application and the required documents to your local Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) field office. The address for your office is included in the paperwork, but you can also find it online (see Resources below).

    • 4

Wait for a representative from the local field office to contact you. The office has up to 45 days to approve or deny your application. In most cases, but not all, a representative will visit your business. Once the application is approved, you will be notified, and you'll receive your license to accept food stamps.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not accept food stamps until your application is approved.
