How to Replace a Leaky Tub Faucet
Every homeowner knows that sooner or later, bathtub faucets are bound to develop a leak. A leak may appear minor, but it can create a large mess and cause serious damage if left unfixed. Fortunately, fixing a leaky tub faucet is a straightforward repair well-suited to do-it-yourself plumbers. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Screwdriver
- Channel-type pliers
- Adjustable wrench
- Faucet cartridge (if needed)
- Assorted O-ring kit

Turn off both the hot- and cold-water supplies to the bathtub. Turn on the faucet and let the remaining water drain out.

Remove the faucet handle and the fixture's cover plate, using a screwdriver.

Remove the bonnet nut holding the cartridge in place, using an adjustable wrench.

Channel-type pliers are essential for this project. Grasp the end of the valve with the pliers and pull gently to remove the cartridge assembly from the valve body.

Clean the inside of the valve body with water to remove any dirt or sediment.

Replace worn O-rings on the cartridge assembly with new ones from the O-ring kit. Make sure the sizes of the new rings match those of the old ones. Some makes of faucet have cartridges designed to be replaced when they wear out; if this is the case, discard the old cartridge it and replace it with a new one made for your fixture.

Push the new cartridge in place, then seat the bonnet nut in the valve body and tighten it, using the adjustable wrench. Turn the water supply back on and check for leaks. Use the screwdriver to replace the cover plate and the faucet handle.
