1
Take along a kitchen cabinet drawer Pick something timeless or choose something that makes a bold statement. Try to have a new backsplash installed before having new countertops installed, if countertops are also planned. Take a sample of the countertop and a kitchen cabinet drawer along when shopping for backsplash materials. This makes it easier to find backsplash materials that match the dominant kitchen items, the cabinetry and countertops. Forget about trying to match a new backsplash to the paint, cabinet hardware or window treatments, as these decor items can be easily replaced.

Visit several businesses that install backsplashes, like tile and flooring companies, or the big box home improvement centers. Look at the samples on display and ask to see photographed samples of finished projects. Visualize what will look good in your home by looking at examples that have the same counter and cabinet colors that you will be working with. Go to a bookstore or home improvement center and look at books that have photographs of kitchen tile designs.

Glass tile Consider the style of the room where the backsplash will be installed. Seek out modern tile, like glass or slate, for modern rooms. Choose 2-inch metal tile inserts to place between 4-inch by 4-inch tile squares or slant the tile at a 45-degree angle using 6-inch by 6-inch tile for a modern look as well.

Harlequin design Select a diamond-shaped tile, patterned much like a harlequin design, for a retro look. Install under mount cabinet lights to reflect on the backsplash. Look at subway tile, which is very smooth, for a retro look as well. Alternate the colors of tile to create visual impact or use one color for a consistent effect.

Extend granite countertops Extend countertops, like granite, to blend into the backsplash for a seamless appearance. Consider, also, continuing the granite onto the backsplash by placing 4-inch granite tiles that match the granite countertop with smaller 2-inch decorative inserts. Replace kitchen windowsills with matching granite as well.

Mural backsplash Look at tumbled stone for a natural-looking backsplash. It has just a bit of texture and looks best when matched with grout that is similar to the dominant stone color. Put picture frame-shaped tumbled stone above the cooktop or sink area for a classic look. Mural backsplashes are also classic, primarily for homes that are traditional or farmhouse style. Floral themes, herbs, seashells or even family names are subject matter for mural tiles.
