How to Delete the Startup.Exe Virus

The startup.exe file can be created and used by viruses, malware and hackers to compromise the security of your computer. If you have reason to believe that your computer is running the startup.exe file infected by a virus, you can attempt to shut down the process and manually remove the file. It is possible for many instances of startup.exe to run on a computer if more than one virus has installed the file.

Stop the Startup.exe Process

  • Press the "Ctrl," "Alt" and "Del" keys simultaneously to launch the "Task Manager."

  • Go to the "Processes" tab. This tab will list all of the processes that are currently running on your computer.

  • Review the list and find any instances of "startup.exe" running on your computer. It is possible to have more than one instance of the process running.

  • Click on "startup.exe" once to highlight the name, then click the "End Process" button to stop the process.

Delete the Startup.exe File

  • Click the Start button to launch the start menu. Windows XP users will need to click "Search" in the start menu. Windows Vista and 7 users will need to click "Computer" from the start menu.

  • Configure the search. Windows XP users will need to search "All files and folders" under "Local Hard Drives." Windows Vista and 7 users can type into the "Search Computer" text box in the top right corner of the "Computer" window.

  • Search for "startup.exe." When you find the file in your search, delete it. It is possible that the search can find more than one copy of this file. Delete each instance of the file as it appears in the search.

  • Reboot your computer to complete all changes to your system.
