Finding a government job in Ontario, Canada can be a challenging proposition. The requirements for the various available positions are fairly strict, as the majority of the positions call for extensive education and experience relating directly to the field in question. The positions usually require a basic knowledge of government regulations or, at the very least, on the ministry being applied to. Ontario government jobs have the advantage of paying well and offering job security.

  • Visit the website http://www.gojobs.gov.on.ca/Jobs.aspx, which contains postings for all available Ontario government jobs.

    For students and recent graduates, click the "Youth and New Professionals" button, which will provide you with a listing of summer employment and internship opportunities.

  • Narrow down the criteria using the drop-down menu options. The website allows you to select a region, city, job category and minimum salary. You also have the option of entering the Job ID # if you are applying for a specific job.

  • Select which job you want to apply for. While some jobs accept applications by mail or fax, most only have the option of applying on line. Click the "View Job Specs" button at the bottom of the job description. This gives you a detailed breakdown of the duties and responsibilities of the position, as well as the skills required of a successful candidate.

  • Click the "Apply Online" button at the bottom of the job description. Fill in the "Personal Information" section of the application form and add your cover letter and resume. These two documents should be added as a single file. To improve your chances of getting an interview for the position, use your resume as an opportunity to highlight how you are qualified for that specific position. Government jobs are highly competitive; don't use a generic resume and cover letter.

  • Prepare for an interview, should you acquire one. Interviews for Ontario Government positions customarily include the interview itself and either a test or presentation.
