How to Do a Clean Install of Windows XP Without a CD

Save

A clean installation of Windows XP is an install that will leave nothing on your hard drive but the operating system files. This is necessary where drastic problems have forced drastic action, such as viruses or severe malware infections. Installing a clean copy of Windows XP without the disk can be accomplished from the files in the i386.

  • Right-click "Start" and click "Explore."

  • Click "C," open the "Windows" folder, and click on the "i386."

  • Double-click "winnt32.exe" to start the installation.

  • Click "Enter" and press "F8" to move through the first two screens.

  • Highlight the drive containing your current Windows XP installation and press "D" to delete the partition.

  • Press "C" to create a clean partition, highlight it and press "Enter," then select the "NTFS" file system. This will reinstall Windows XP on your computer.
