Solar Pool Cover Directions

Solar covers, also called solar blankets, increase a pool's temperature anywhere from 4 to 10 degrees Fahrenheit on sunny days. The covers also help keep water and pool chemicals from evaporating too quickly. Solar covers are sold at most pool stores. You may also purchase solar cover cleaners and reels to aid in cleaning and moving your solar cover.

Things You'll Need

  • Scissors
  • Garden hose
  • Pool brush
  • Pool telescopic pole
  • Place the new folded solar cover into the middle of the pool. Begin to unfold the solar cover with the bubble side down next to the water. Unwrap the entire cover and center on the pool. Allow the cover to remain on the pool for two days. This allows the cover time to warm up from the sun's rays and stretch out.

  • Trim the solar cover with scissors anywhere the cover is hanging over the pool edge. The cover should fit snugly against the water. Trim so the edge of the cover fits down inside the pool edge.

  • Pull the solar cover from the pool when you wish to use the pool. Fold the cover lengthwise, then the width, alternating until the cover is small enough to put back into the storage bag it came in. Place the bag in the garage.

  • Clean the top of your solar pool cover with a garden hose . Leave the cover on the pool if you wish.

  • Pour or spray the solar cover cleaner on the cover and brush with a pool brush attached to the telescopic cleaning pole that came with the pool. Rinse off with the garden hose. The solar cleaner should not hurt the pool's chemistry balance and the filter system cleans the dirt from the solar cover.

Tips & Warnings

  • Purchase a solar cover reel for easier removal and storage of the cover when the pool is in use. A solar cover reel fits across the pool, and the cover attaches to straps on the reel. The cover is cranked one way to remove the cover and cranked the opposite way to place the cover back on the pool.
