How to Record a Live Stream

Save

A "live stream" is audio piped into your computer from the Internet. As opposed to downloading a copy of the audio to your computer, the audio information is simply played over your speakers and then deleted automatically. Thus, no digital copy of the live streaming audio is ever saved on your computer. That is, of course, unless you record a copy yourself using a feature of your operating system.

Windows

  • Click "Start."

  • Click "Programs."

  • Click "Accessories."

  • Click "Sound Recorder." This will launch Windows' built-in sound recording utility.

  • Open your Web browser. Navigate to the website that has the live streaming audio that you'd like to record. Begin to play the audio in your Web browser.

  • Click "Start Recording" in the "Sound Recorder" utility window. This will begin recording the live streaming audio from your Web browser in the form of a computer audio file on your hard drive.

Mac

  • Click the "Apple" menu button on the desktop to bring up a list of your computer's applications.

  • Open the program called "SimpleSound."

  • Open your Web browser. Navigate to the website that has the live streaming audio that you'd like to record. Begin to play the audio in your Web browser.

  • Click "Start Recording" in the "SimpleSound" utility window. This will begin recording the live streaming audio from your Web browser in the form of a computer audio file on your hard drive.
