How to Replace a York Furnace Thermocouple

A thermocouple is an integral piece on a York gas furnace with a standing pilot light. The thermocouple keeps the pilot light lit through the transfer of heat to the primary valve. When the thermocouple on your York furnace malfunctions, the pilot light will go out and the furnace will not kick on when heat is called for. Since a thermocouple is a irreparable item, you will need to replace it. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • New thermocouple
  • Flat-head screwdriver

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the main gas valve to your York furnace. The main gas valve is located on the gas pipe on the outside of the furnace proper, and looks much like a regular water valve, painted black. Turn the handle so that it faces perpendicular to the pipe.

    • 2

Remove the thermocouple access panel using a flat-head screwdriver to turn the screws counterclockwise. The access panel is near the bottom of the furnace, and it is also the primary access panel for the main furnace jets as well.

    • 3

Locate the actual thermocouple. Trace back from the primary gas valve (the valve with the "on and off" markings) to the small copper lead pipe towards the pilot light.

    • 4

Unscrew the thermocouple connecting nut, attached to the primary gas valve, by using your adjustable wrench.

    • 5

Carefully pull the copper tube out and away from the primary gas valve, then disconnect the copper lead or the head of the thermostat. It may be held in by a small screw or a clip that just pushes up and pulls out, depending on the model of furnace.

    • 6

Uncoil the new thermostat from the package and install it in the reverse direction as it came out. Make sure all connections are tight, then refer to the York manual directions on how to light a pilot light for your particular model.
