With the world always changing and more employment opportunities becoming office-based, being able to type quickly and efficiently is a skill in high demand. Type. A lot. For you to become proficient at typing, you will have to type a lot of text. Use any and every opportunity to practice typing, whether it be instant messaging or Twitter or chat rooms. Any place that you are allowed to type can be useful.

2
Recite the alphabet. A typical QWERTY keyboard (look down at your keyboard to understand the name) has the letters set up in such a manner that common lettering is easier to reach with your fingers than uncommon letters. Practice typing the alphabet and, over time, you will begin to look at your monitor rather than at your keyboard as you type.

Type out poems or song lyrics. This will get you accustomed to typing out of alphabetical order and, over time, will give you the muscle memory of knowing where each key is. You can further improve your typing by holding down the "Shift" key to type in all capital letters.

4
Take online tests. There are many online tests that give you one minute to type as many words as possible. Take these tests repeatedly to improve your speed by trying to one-up your score from your previous test.

5
Play games. Certain video games, like Typing of the Dead, can help you type faster by putting the in-game pressure of being eaten by zombies onto your shoulders with the only way of dispatching them is to type phrases that appear over their heads.
