How to Register Tow Trucks in Washington

It takes a special kind of vehicle to handle impounded, damaged or abandoned cars in Washington state--at least, that is, according to the Washington State Legislature. Tow trucks must qualify for one of two weight classifications and have the capability to move, tow and transport abandoned or damaged vehicles. Tow truck operators in Washington must go through a series of steps before they can register their trucks and go about the business of moving cars.

Instructions

    • 1

Register as a tow truck operator with the Washington State Department of Licensing. Obtain a $5,000 bond, submit a list of drivers, buy insurance, allow inspection of your business facilities and pay licensing fees. Upon receipt of the required forms and fees, the Department of Licensing will issue you a tow truck operator's license.

    • 2

Schedule an inspection of your tow trucks by the Washington State Patrol. State Patrol inspectors will check your trucks to ensure they operate appropriately and safely, as well as check to see how much weight they will bear to classify them in the appropriate tow truck class. Inspectors will issue a report to you on-site, after they have completed their inspection.

    • 3

Submit the registration form, application fee and a copy of the inspection report to the Washington State Department of Licensing, along with a copy of your tow truck operator license. The Department of Licensing will issue a permit or decal for each truck that passed inspection after it receives all required documentation and fees. Display the decal or permit in the windshield of the tow truck as required by state law as well as your business name, contact information, tow truck operator number and tow truck classification in a visible place.
