Building a boat model with your children is an experience that everyone will enjoy. The actual building process itself will provide entertainment for your children and will not be difficult for them to do with your help. In addition, the boat model will actually float in water, which will allow for the children to play with it for hours after it has been constructed. The materials needed to construct the model boat are cheap and available around the house and at a local arts and crafts shop.
Things You'll Need
- Empty 2-liter milk carton
- 3 straws
- Scotch tape
- Plastic wrap
- Hole puncher
Cut the carton in half and turn it on its side so that the inside of the carton faces upward.
Punch four holes in the corners of the carton roughly 1 inch from the top of each corner.
Tape one straw horizontally 1 inch from the top of another straw, then tape another straw 2 to 3 inches horizontally across the bottom of the same straw.
Wrap a piece of plastic wrap between the two horizontal straws. This will create the sail and mast of your boat. Tape the mast straw to the bottom of the milk carton.
Thread a piece of string through one of the corner holes, then tie one end. Tie the other end to the top of the mast piece. Repeat this process with each hole you punched earlier.
Color or paint the boat, if desired. Allow kids to take the boat to a place with water and play with it. The boat will float on its own.
