Check the history on your PC if you can't remember the name of a file or website.

You can see a lot more than Internet viewing history on a PC. Windows users can also check the activity history of files, documents, music, pictures and videos. How you check the Internet and computer history depends on what web browser you're using, and also what version of Windows you have. If you want to revisit a file or website, but can't remember the name of it, reviewing your history can help you find it.

Instructions

  1. Internet Explorer History

      Open the Internet Explorer web browser.

      Click on the "Favorites" button in the top toolbar.

      Select the "History" tab, and then choose the time period that you want to view the history of. A list of websites that were visited within that time period will appear.

    Firefox History

      Open the Firefox web browser.

      Click on the "History" option on the top of the screen.

      Click on "Show All History," and then select the time period that you want to view the history of by double-clicking on it. A list of websites that were visited within that time period will appear.

    Windows Vista History

      Click on the "Start" menu button, which is located in the lower left-hand corner of the screen.

      Select your user folder, which may be labeled as "My Documents."

      Click on the folder labeled "Searches," and then select the folder you want to see the history of. You can see emails, documents, photos, videos and music that were opened and modified.

    Windows XP History

      Right-click on the "Start" menu button, and select "Properties" from the drop-down menu.

      Click on "Customize," which is right next to the "Start menu" radio button.

      Select the "Advanced" tab, and click inside the box labeled "List my most recently opened documents." Click on "OK," and then when the "Taskbar and Start Menu Properties" dialogue box appears again, click on "Apply," and then "OK."

      Click on the "Start" menu button, and then select "My Recent Documents" from the pop-up menu. You will see a list of files that were recently opened or modified, and clicking on any of those documents will open it up.

    Windows 7 History

      Click on the "Start" menu button.

      Hover your mouse over the application that you want to view the history of in the Start menu. For example, if you want to view Internet Explorer history, hover the mouse over the "Internet Explorer" icon, and click on the small arrow on the right side of the icon to open up a list of recently viewed websites. Or, if you want to see recent Microsoft Word documents, hover the mouse over the "Microsoft Word" icon, and click on the little arrow to the right of the icon to open up a list of documents that were recently opened or modified.

      Click on the file or website from the drop-down menu that appears if you want to visit that page.
