How to Make Things Out of Recycled Material

Save

You can make an endless number of things out of recycled materials, limited only by your imagination and the types of materials you can find around your house and in your recycle bin. An old compact disc, for example, can be used to create an attractive photo frame.

Things You'll Need

  • Bowl
  • 1 cup of white flour
  • Water
  • Salt
  • Old CD
  • Wet towel
  • Paint, any color
  • Paint brush
  • Pen
  • Round object
  • Photo
  • Scissors
  • Double stick tape
  • Tacky Glue
  • Sticky back felt (optional)
  • Mix 1 cup of flour, a dash of salt and some water in a bowl with your hands, forming a dough ball. Use only enough water to make the flour hold together in a ball.

  • Flatten the ball on one side on a table. This will be your photo frame base.

  • Press a ½" slit into the top of the ball with the CD. Wipe dough off the CD with a wet towel. Allow the dough to harden and dry.

  • Paint the base any color you wish.

  • Use something round to trace a circle onto the back of your photo with a pen. Make sure it's larger than the hole in the CD but smaller than the outer edge of the CD. Cut the circle out of the photo.

  • Affix the circle photo to the front of the CD.

  • Put a little Tacky Glue in the slit in the base and insert the CD into the slit.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can use the CD to trace a circle onto some sticky back felt. Cut out the circle and stick it to the back of the CD.
  • Make sure to leave about an inch between the edge of the photo and the edge of the CD so that when it sits in the base, the base won't obstruct the view of the photo.
