Piano Moving Instructions

If at all possible, you should have your piano moved by professional piano movers, especially if it's a grand piano. Piano movers have experience moving heavy objects, particularly over long distances or in difficult areas, such as up stairs or through hallways. They also have insurance to cover any damage to your piano if something goes wrong. You'll also want a piano mover to do the moving if your piano does not have wheels. If you're just moving your piano a short distance, however, you can usually do so with the help of some friends.

Instructions

    • 1

Unlock any wheel locks on your piano and move the piano a short distance---like, a few inches---to make sure it is stable. If it's stable, you can move the piano within a small area, like a house or a school. If it is not stable or does not have wheels, you'll need a piano dolly to move it.

    • 2

Lock the dolly's wheels and lift the piano onto the dolly, with one person lifting each corner. The piano's broadest part should be across the center of the dolly. Always lift with your knees and not your back. Unlock the dolly's wheels.

    • 3

Put down some carpet or plastic sheeting on the floor to keep from gouging the floor or damaging rugs. Spread the carpet or sheeting along the entire route the piano will take once you begin moving it.

    • 4

Position one person at each end of the piano. If you have more than two people helping, position two people at the keyboard end of the piano, and one person at the other end. Anyone else available can help by steadying the direction the piano will move by pushing on the curve of a grand piano or either side of an upright piano.

    • 5

Push gently in the same direction and roll the piano to where you want it. Relock the wheels. If you used a piano dolly, lock the dolly's wheels, lift the piano from the dolly and place it onto the floor.
