How to Make a Net Canopy
A net canopy, made of mosquito netting, is an easy touch to add to any room of the house. Whether you want to place it over the bed to create a romantic look, or you want to arrange a corner of the room into a Moroccan-style seating area complete with floor pillows, a net canopy is versatile and simple to make with only a few simple tools and purchases. - Sheer fabric or mosquito netting
- Measuring tape
- Sewing needle and like-color thread or sewing machine
- Pencil
- Step stool or ladder
- Drill
- Screw-in hook

Measure the space where you want the canopy to hang. If you want to place it over the bed, measure the width and length of the mattress and add enough to drape over the sides. Keep in mind that the net will be hung from the ceiling, so you will need to add extra length to your measurements.

Select your sheer fabric or mosquito netting from a fabric store. Sheer fabrics enhance the romantic feel of the room but will be harder to see through than traditional mosquito netting. Mosquito netting often comes in white, while sheer fabrics will allow you to find a complimentary color for the room.

Hem the fabric or netting for a professional look. Even though the fabric store cut the fabric for you, cuts may be uneven or jagged. Enhance the finished product by folding over the cut approximately ½ inch and sewing with a needle and thread or sewing machine.

Create a loop in the fabric so you have somewhere to hang the netting from. Use a small scrap of trimmed fabric and twist it, and then use a sewing needle to attach it to the center of your canopy.

Determine where you want your netting to be hung. If you want it over a bed or seating area, use a pencil to mark the center of the space on the ceiling.

Place a ladder or step stool directly below the pencil mark, so you have a sturdy surface to stand on. Drill a small hole into the center of the pencil mark, and screw in the hook.

Hang the canopy loop onto the hook, and then arrange the draping to fit nicely around the bed or seating area.

Tips & Warnings
Using a sewing machine will be more efficient in hemming the fabric, but is not necessary for obtaining the finished product.
