How to Unclog HP Inkjet Cartridges

How to Unclog HP Inkjet Cartridges thumbnail
Cotton swabs can be used to manually clean out a clog.

HP inkjet printers generally feature print heads that are built into the ink cartridges. Despite the fact the print heads are changed more often than in machines where the print head is separate from the ink cartridge, factors such as lack of use can cause dried ink droplets to collect on the print head, creating a clog that can cause parts of letters or images to not print on a page. HP ink jet printers can be cleaned using an automatic cleaning process. If the automatic cleaning does not work, the user has the option of manually cleaning the cartridge.

Instructions

  1. Automatic Cleaning

    • 1

Turn the printer and attached computer on. Wait for the printer to finish its warmup process.

    • 2

Click on the "Start" button and go to the "Programs" option. Look for the "HP" folder, then click on the "HP Toolbox" icon. Wait for the HP Toolbox program to launch.

    • 3

Click on the "Printer Services" tab in HP Toolbox, then click on "Clean Printheads" and follow the instructions that appear on the computer's screen. The instructions will vary depending on the model of HP printer you own.

    Manual Cleaning

    • 4

Turn on the printer and open the access cover. Wait for the cartridge carriage to get to the center of the printer, then unplug the power cord.

    • 5

Remove the ink cartridge from the printer.

    • 6

Dip a cotton swab in the hot water. Clean the print head on the ink jet cartridge. It may take several cotton swabs to unclog the print cartridge, depending on how badly clogged it is.

    • 7

Wait for the ink cartridge to completely dry. Put the cartridge back in its slot in the carriage. Print a few test pages to make sure no dried ink residue comes out onto the paper.

Tips & Warnings

  • Never force an ink cartridge into or out of the printer. The print cartridges should easily snap into and out of place without being forced.
