How to Upgrade From Internet Explorer 5.5 to 6.0 on ME
Released by Microsoft in 2001, Internet Explorer 6.0 is the last version of Internet Explorer that is supported on Windows Millennium Edition (ME), which comes with Internet Explorer 5.5 out of the box. Each new release of Internet Explorer brings performance enhancements and improved security, and if you are running Windows ME, it is in your best interest to run the latest version of the browser available. Upgrade from Internet Explorer 5.5 to Internet Explorer 6.0 to make your computer as reliable as it can be.

Browse to the Internet Explorer 6 with Service Pack 1 download page using the link in the "Resources" section of this article. Click the gray "Download" button at the top of the page, and save the resulting file to the desktop.

Close Internet Explorer and return to the desktop. Double click "ie6setup.exe."

Examine the terms of use for Internet Explorer 6. If you agree to the terms, click "I accept the agreement," then click "Next."

Select "Install Minimal" to only install Internet Explorer 6 with Service Pack 1, or select "Install Now--Typical Set of Components" to also install and upgrade Outlook Express and Windows Media Player. Click "Next." A summary screen is displayed showing what system components you have decided to upgrade.

Examine the summary screen and add or remove checks for any components that you would like to change, then click "Next." The setup program begins downloading the selected components. When the files are done downloading, a screen is displayed prompting you to restart your computer.

Click "Finish" to restart the computer. When the computer restarts, Internet Explorer 6 is ready to use.
