For frequent grillers, even routine grate maintenance may not prevent the need eventually to clean and re-season the cast iron. Food particle buildup, or fading color, is an indication that it's time to give the grate a quick scrub and heat sterilization.   • Hot water
  • Wire brush
  • Clean cloth
  • Vegetable shortening or cooking oil

      Scrub the slats of cast iron grate with hot water and a stiff brush. Scrub between the slats, scrubbing any food particles that may be clinging to the sides.

      Rinse off any debris with more hot water, and dry completely with a clean, dry cloth.

      Coat both sides of the cast iron grate evenly with a thin veneer of melted vegetable shortening or cooking oil. Smear the melted shortening or oil around the grate with your cloth, if necessary.

      Set your barbecue on the highest setting, and cook the iron grate for 1 to 2 hours.
