Visit Spelling City. This website offers free, customized spelling practice lessons. Users can enter their own spelling list, and study, play games or even quiz themselves on the words.

Enter your school spelling list, or words that you struggle with. Type your spelling words into the website to begin the creation of your individualized spelling lesson. If you are trying to study for a school spelling test, you can put in the words that your teacher gave to you. If, instead, you are trying to build your spelling skills on your own, type in a list of words that you struggle with or want to use to challenge yourself.

Click the "Teach Me" tab. After you click on this tab, you will receive a drop-down menu full of your words. Select one of your words to hear the word read to you and the word used in a sentence.

As you listen, look at the spelling of the word. Return to each word as many times as necessary. By listening again and again, you will ensure that you know how to pronounce the word and understand its basic meaning.

Practice the words by playing available games. This website offers an array of games to help you study. You can select from word finds, crosswords, scrambles, matching games and many others. Play several of these games. The more you practice the words, the more likely you are to remember them, so playing several games will likely improve your overall understanding of how each word is spelled.

Test yourself to ensure that you understand. After you think you have mastered each word, make sure by testing yourself. Click on the "Test Me" tab. When you click on this tab, you will be given an oral spelling test, similar to those you take in school. The system will read you each word, and you must type the word into the website. After entering all of the words, you will receive a report detailing which words you spelled correctly, and which you missed, so that you know what you still need to study.
