How to Learn Martial Arts Skills Online

How to Learn Martial Arts Skills Online thumbnail
Learning martial arts online is possible, but limited.

Martial arts skills can be learned online, but learning is limited. Because martial arts require contact with other people, having an actual (as opposed to virtual) teacher is necessary. Online text and videos can show you basic techniques, punches and kicks, but if you are making a mistake, no one is there to correct you. If you have slightly incorrect movement, you can severely injure yourself and others.

Instructions

    • 1

View sites such as martialinfo.com or bodybuilding.com. If you know the particular type of martial art you are interested in, try searching for videos of that form on YouTube and Google Video. There are hundreds of types of martial arts, so pick a style you like.

Choose a site that explains what you are looking for, with detailed text and video. Be sure you have a space where you can see your computer screen and have room to move, kick and jump. Some people prefer to purchase a thick exercise mat, especially if you have a hard floor and will be jumping or working on the ground.

    • 3

Play the video of the martial art move you wish to learn. Perform the move a few times by yourself. Once you have done it several times and know all the points to look for, consult the video or text again to be sure you are doing everything properly.

Realize that the disadvantage of learning a physical skill on the Internet means that if you don't know what you did wrong, you would have to try to research another site that gives greater detail on the move. Since you are working out by yourself, you are limited to what you know. If you can locate a site with a live, online instructor who can interact with you by video, you may be able to progress. If you have a site where you can email questions to an instructor, you can explain your problems and wait for an answer.

Practice the skills you are learning. Many martial arts have katas or set movements that are very much like a dance. Watch and/or read exactly what to do. Practice the movements again and again. Set aside a time, perhaps an hour each day, to perform the skills.
