How to Estimate Fabric for Reupholstering Chairs

Estimate the yardage.

Measuring a chair for upholstery fabric can be a detailed process. Getting too much fabric can be a waste of money. Not enough can mean extra expenses of more fabric and trips to the store. It is important to have the right tools and take enough time to get accurate measurements. Knowing what kind of fabric will be used to reupholster the chair is also necessary. If you are using patterns or stripes, the fabric will need to be strategically placed on the chair and will affect the final yardage required. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Make a diagram of the chair and label every part that will be covered with fabric. Include every upholstered area, no matter how small. Double-check the drawing with the chair to ensure accuracy.

    • 2

Measure the chair. Take measurements in both directions, vertically and horizontally. Always place the tape across the widest part of each section being measured. "T" shapes and rolled arms are common shapes in chairs. Measure the widest and longest parts of the "T." For curved sections, hold the tape at the top or bottom and place it along the roll to get the entire length of the section. Then measure the width. Add 2 to 2-1/2 inches to each measurement for seam allowance. Write all measurements for each section down on the paper.

    • 3

Add all the measurements together. Divide the number by 36 to get the approximate yardage needed.

    • 4

Figure the pattern repeat. If the fabric has a pattern or stripes, you will need to add extra yardage to match the pattern at the seams. This is more critical if the pattern is large and centered on the chair. A general estimate for a 3-inch pattern is 10 per cent extra yardage and a 27-inch pattern might require 20 per cent for a typical 54-inch-width fabric. A rough guide is to add 1 yard of fabric for a chair with patterned fabric.

    • 5

Lay out the pattern on paper. Draw a rectangle that represents the length and width of each section of fabric needed. Draw each section of fabric needing to be cut. This will make sure each piece will fit on the fabric and allow each pattern repeat to be accounted for.

    • 6

Add all the numbers from the chair measurements, pattern repeat and layout. This will give you the approximate yardage needed. Be sure to add 1/2 to 1 yard extra for mistakes.

Tips & Warnings

  • Keep the tape against the fabric so that it is taut but not stretched.

  • Measure the chair with the old fabric still attached. This will give the most accurate measurements.

  • Don't forget to measure all sides of the cushions and pillows, if there are any.
