How to Convert a Macrovision Video Tape to DVD
Macrovision is a special tool used on some VHS tapes to keep individuals from recording the contents of a DVD onto a VHS tape. However, if you want to record the content of a Macrovision tape and burn it onto a DVD, you are not going to have the same problems--you just need a video capture card installed on your computer. Having one allows you to easily record the contents of the VHS tape and back it up onto a DVD.
Things You'll Need
- Computer
- Video capture card
- Macrovision VHS tape
- VCR
- Coaxial cable
- DVD burner
- Blank DVD
- DVD burning software

1
Connect the coaxial cable into the "Out" port of the VCR, then plug the opposite end into the coaxial cable "In" port on the video capture card. If you do not have a video capture card currently installed on the computer, you can purchase an external, USB-based card from most electronic and computer stores.
-
2
Launch the video editing program you have on the computer (such as iMovie or Windows Movie Maker) and press the "Power" button on the VCR.
-
-
3
Select the "Capture" feature on the video editing, then select the "Video Capture Card" as the hardware you want to use to capture the content.
-
4
Click "Record" and press "Play on the VCR" and the contents of the macrovision tape are imported into the computer. Click "Stop" to stop the recording once finished.
-
5
Click and drag the recorded video into the timeline at the bottom of the screen (upper left if using iMovie), then choose the "Export" option. Title your video, select a location to save the footage to, then click "Save." By default, the video becomes a .wmv movie in Windows and a .mov movie when using iMovie.
-
6
Insert the blank DVD into the DVD burner and launch the DVD burning software. Select to create a "Video DVD" once the software loads, followed by dragging the exported video into the main viewing area of the burning software.
-
7
Click "Burn" and the macrovision video tape burns onto a DVD.
