Instructions

    • 1

Check the ceiling for the angle to cut the crown moldings. Use a step ladder to work up close to the crown moldings. Beginning at one corner of the room, check the length of the first piece of crown molding. Use a tape measure to measure from one corner to the opposite corner. Write this dimension down on a piece of paper to cut the crown molding later.

    • 2

Measure the angle of the corner of the room. Use a 360-degree protractor for this step to measure the corner's angle. The protractor is remarkably accurate and will tell you the angle needed for this cut. The miter joint is cut on a miter saw and is one half of the entire angle.

    • 3

Cut the crown molding to the angle that you found in the last step. Adjust the miter saw to the correct angle and lock the miter saw into place. Place a piece of crown upside down against the miter saw fence. Use miter saw stops to hold it in position on the miter saw. Start the saw and cut the crown molding. You create less tear out in the wood if you pull the saw slowly through the cut. Use a piece of scrap crown molding to cut each side of the corner. This will allow you to dry fit the corner together to make certain of the joint before cutting the actual finish pieces of crown molding.

Repeat Step 3 to cut the opposite side of the crown molding for the corner. Unlock the miter saw and rotate the saw to the opposite side at the angle needed. Lock the miter saw into position and cut the crown molding.

Tips & Warnings

  • Test the miter cuts on scrap pieces of crown molding before cutting the actual pieces.

  • Wear safety glasses and hearing protection when working with a miter saw.
