How to Build Up Crown Molding Profiles

1
Pull up different crown molding profiles, baseboard and dental molding profiles from a trim molding supplier on the Internet. Most web sites offer PDF files of the profile of their moldings that are to scale. Use these to design your own custom crown molding.
-
2
Draw a straight line across the top of a piece of grid paper. Draw a line 90 degrees to the last line to represent the wall of the grid paper. Cut out your profiles of the moldings that you downloaded.

3
Arrange the different profiles on the grid paper to make a custom crown molding profile, which will provide you a good sense of how the built-up crown molding will look once it has been assembled on the wall. A good way to layer the moldings is to place a baseboard molding upside down, layer a dental molding on top of that and place a large piece of crown on top of the dental molding.
-
4
Pick up a sample of each of the profiles that you chose to use from the trim supplier. Nail and glue these together as you want to assemble them on the wall. Once this is dry, place it up on the wall to make sure you like the profile.
-
5
Install the built-up crown one piece at a time. Use the sample mock up of the profile as a reference to mark a line where it will start on the wall. Measure down from the ceiling the distance to the bottom of the built-up crown profile. Transfer this distance to each end of one wall, and make a mark there with a pencil. Use a chalk line to snap a straight chalk line on the wall, which will provide a reference line for where to place the first piece of the crown profile.
-
6
Repeat the last step for the remaining walls.
