If you are making your own wine and are getting ready to bottle and cork it, you may be wondering if you need to do anything to prepare your corks for the bottling process. If you are using real cork and the corks are still in their packaging, you do not need to do any soaking before using the corks with your corker. The packaged corks will be sterilized and ready for use. However, if your corks are exposed for any length of time, you will want to soak them before corking your bottles. Does this Spark an idea?

  • Lukewarm water
  • Metabisulfite
  • Bowl

Instructions

      Fill the bowl with lukewarm water.

      Follow the directions on your container of metabisulfite. Add the metabisulfite to the water and stir. The metabisulfite will sterilize the corks.

      Put the corks in the bowl with the water and metabisulfite. Let them soak for 20 minutes and remove them. Dry them off. They are now ready to be used for corking your wine.
