How to Make Corn Decorations for a Thanksgiving Table
Thanksgiving is a time for families to gather and share memories, laughter and pumpkin pie. The center of the day is the meal and the table at which it is served. Make the dinner table more memorable by adding handcrafted decorations that are themed around a Thanksgiving dinner staple: corn. Older children can make these decorations with a little adult assistance and some materials that can be purchased at your local craft store. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Raffia paper
- Twine
- Scissors
- Glue
- Yellow construction paper
- Several different colors of tissue paper
- White place mats
- Corn
- Corn cob holders
- Several different colors of fabric paint
- Paper plates

Colorful Corn

Cut three pieces of raffia paper into sections that are 18 to 20 inches long and 3 inches wide.

Twist each of the pieces of raffia lengthwise and unwind them. Cut the end of each piece to a point.

Place the three pieces over one another to form a fan. Glue the three pieces together and then tie the pieces together in the center with a piece of twine.

Cut out the shape of three pieces of corn from yellow construction paper. The corn should be large enough to fit inside the top of the corn husk.

Cut several different colored pieces of tissue paper into small squares that are about 2 inches by 2 inches in size.

Crumple up the paper and glue it in rows to resemble a corn cob.

Push the corn into the raffia cob and glue it in place.

Cut uncooked corn cobs into 2-inch sections.

Place corn cob holders into each side of the section.

Pour fabric paint onto paper plates. Each color should have its own plate. For a more festive look, use autumnal colors such as brown, yellow and orange. Dip a section of the corn into each of the colors.

Lay a white, fabric place mat onto a flat surface.

Roll the paint colored corn cobs onto the place mats. Make any patterns you wish. Allow the place mats to dry and set them on the table.
