How to Design Your Own Indoor Basketball Court

How to Design Your Own Indoor Basketball Court thumbnail
The dimensions of your court will depend on the use of the court.

Official basketball teams begin in junior high school, and youth teams begin even before that. Because basketball is such a popular and competitive sport, having your own basketball court to practice on year-round would help increase your practice time and up your skill levels. Before deciding to build a court, however, you should first consider the design aspect.

Instructions

    • 1

Decide how your court will be used and how much space you have to work with when deciding on dimensions. According to Basketball-Goals.com, junior high school basketball courts measure 74 feet in length and 42 feet in width, high school courts measure 84 feet in length and 50 feet in width, and NBA and NCAA courts measure 94 feet in length and 50 feet in width.

    • 2

Draw the dimensions you plan on using onto a rectangular piece of paper. Then, draw on the two basketball hoops on each end of the court. The hoop height should be 10 feet from the playing surface to the top of the goal.

    • 3

Find a diagram of a basketball court to help you remember where all the lines go on the court and what the measurements for these should be. These types of diagrams are available online or in sporting goods stores.

    • 4

Draw the rest of the basketball court lines on the piece of paper, making sure to center them correctly from each end of the paper, treating the ends of the paper as the walls of the room. To begin, draw the half-court line in the middle of the court.

    • 5

Write the correct dimensions onto the paper once all the lines are drawn. For example, for a court with NCAA dimensions, the circle in the middle of the half-court line contains a six-foot radius, each three-point line is 19 feet from the closest parallel out-of-bounds line, the middle of each hoop rests 63 inches from the closest out-of-bounds line, and so on.

    • 6

After drawing the design with all the dimensions, find or build a room that will make a suitable basketball court. Make sure it can fit the dimensions mentioned above and provide a ceiling that is at least 27 feet high. The room should also provide extra space around the court lines for beginning plays and for walking safely around the court.

    • 7

Make a list of materials you'll need to build. The floor should contain hardwood tiles that snap together, because hardwood offers extra support and can support jumping. You'll also need measuring tape, chalk, two basketball hoops, basketballs, a scoreboard and more. Lastly, purchase the colored tape you'll use to apply the court lines.

Tips & Warnings

  • Once the room is built, use your diagram to carefully measure out your dimensions onto the floor. Draw the lines onto the floor with chalk before applying colored tape.
