How to Make Extra Large Ornaments
Ornaments of assorted shapes, sizes and colors add festive accents to your home environment regardless of the season or holiday. Making your own ornaments gives you creative license to make them as small or as large as you want. Extra-large holiday ornaments provide touches of decor to wide-open areas---and are quite easy to create in your own home with common materials.
Things You'll Need
- Sheet of construction paper (color optional)
- Sheet of poster board (cut to 8 inches by 11 inches)
- Assorted markers & other media
- Scissors
- Hole puncher
- 12-inch silk ribbon
- 2 candy canes
- Glue
- 2-inch ornament hook wire
Instructions
-
-
1
Set up your work area with a disposable table cloth or newspaper to keep the area clean.
-
2
Gather art supplies to decorate your paper. Gather pens, markers, pencils, watercolors, pastel sticks and other media to create a design of your choice on the colored construction paper.
-
-
3
Add a candy cane to your paper. Place a candy cane on the center of the construction paper. Tilt the candy cane to the side to create an off-centered look.
-
4
Use a black marker or crayon to evenly outline the candy cane on the sheet of construction paper. Remove the candy cane once this is completed.
-
5
Color in the candy cane tracing with media such as markers and glitter pens. Make the stripes with red glitter pen and fill in the spaces of the candy cane with white gel pen or crayon. Go over the outline of the candy cane tracing with pastel sticks of any color.
-
6
Using your best cursive handwriting, create a greeting---such as "Season's Greetings" or "Merry Christmas"---above the decorative candy cane drawing.
-
7
Glue the construction paper sheet over the center of the poster board. Cut the edges of the poster board to frame the construction paper with a 1-inch margin.
-
8
Use the hole puncher to make a hole at the top of the glued pieces of paper. Don't make the hole too close to the edge, or it might rip.
-
9
Feed the end of the length of silk ribbon through the hole, and slide the decorated card to the middle of the ribbon.
-
10
Tie the ribbon into a bow.
-
11
Insert a wire ornament hook into the hole of the card, and squeeze it closed so it doesn't slip out.
-
12
Glue the two candy canes to the front of the card, one on each side of the candy cane drawing.
-
13
Allow the extra-large ornament about three hours to dry.
-
14
Hang the decorative holiday ornament in the center of a large tree, or on your mantel spaces.
