How to Crochet Hats for Chemo Patients

How to Crochet Hats for Chemo Patients thumbnail
Crochet a hat as a great gift for chemo patients.

Learn to crochet in the round and you'll be able to quickly complete crocheted hats for chemotherapy patients. A homemade gift is always a heartfelt gesture. One that is beautiful, functional and will help keep chemo patients' heads warm is all the better. You will need a crochet hook and skeins of yarn and you'll be on your way to creating a gift they'll truly appreciate.

According to the guidelines of the Kids Chemo Caps Project, hats should be made from yarn that is extra soft as heads left bald by chemotherapy are often sensitive. Cotton and soft man-made washable yarns are recommended.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure or estimate the recipients' general head size. If you are making the hat for a charity project, the organization's guidelines will provide an age range with general sizes for the hats they accept.

    • 2

Choose yarn in an appropriate fiber, weight and color. Choose a hook size that coordinates with the weight of they yarn selected--the yarn label will usually list the hook size best suited to the yarn.

    • 3

Start a slip knot at one end of the yarn. Loop the yarn over itself and pull taut. Place the slip knot on the crochet hook and pull the tail ends until it is fairly tight. Clip the tail end off about an inch from the hook.

    • 4

Crochet five stitches. Loop yarn around the needle entirely and pull the loop over the end of the crochet hook to make a stitch.

    • 5

Place the hook in the first hole of the stitches at the end of the row of five stitches.

    • 6

Stitch the row together by looping yarn around the needle pulling the row of five stitches and the loop over the end of the hook to create a small doughnut of stitches. This is the very top of your hat.

    • 7

Follow your crochet hat pattern. Add single crochet stitches onto each row to increase the circumference of the hat until you reach the desired size, according to your pattern. Generally speaking, crochet in this manner until the round is as large as your open hand.

    • 8

Crochet in rounds to create your hat; it will slowly curve down by crocheting singles on each row until it is the appropriate length--usually about 6 inches for an adult beanie-style hat.
