How to Treat Canine Dandruff

Canine dandruff looks flaky and white, similar to human dandruff. Your dog can get dandruff for various reasons including dry skin, allergies and parasites. Treat canine dandruff as soon as you see evidence of the white flakes. The longer the you let it go, the harder it will be to treat and the more your pet will suffer from scratching.

Instructions

    • 1

Bathe your dog once or twice a month to treat canine dandruff. Use a medicated shampoo for dogs or one specifically for dandruff. The shampoo can be bought at your local pet shop. Lather it into the skin and let it sit for a few minutes before rinsing off.

    • 2

Brush your dog weekly. Do not brush aggressively and do not use a brush with hard bristles; a hard-bristled brush could hurt your dog's skin. Brushing helps treat canine dandruff by distributing natural oils throughout the fur. Brushing also removes much of the dandruff that sits on the hairs.

    • 3

Treat canine dandruff with an oil rinse spray once a week. An oil rinse spray lubricates and locks moisture into your pet's skin, treating dandruff. You can also choose to rub baby oil or olive oil on your dog's skin for severe cases of dandruff. This will also help keep your pet's coat looking shiny.

    • 4

Feed your dog a diet with fatty acids. A high-grade food may help reduce dandruff. Your dog may also need a vitamin supplement such as garlic or fish oil to help treat her dandruff.

Tips & Warnings

  • Avoid using flea shampoos since this can dry out the dog's skin.

  • Do not use human shampoo when bathing your dog. Human shampoos are harmful to pets.
