How to Eliminate the Smell of a Wet Dog
The smell of a wet dog is easy to recognize. It can appear after a bath, after a walk in the rain or after a swim. The smell can take days to disappear depending on the length of the dog's fur and the amount of time it takes to dry. The best way to eliminate the wet dog smell is by bathing and thoroughly blow drying the smelly dog.

1
Brush the dog's fur gently to remove any tangles or matted areas. This is an especially important step for dogs with long fur, but can be skipped for short-haired dogs.
-
2
Take your dog into the bathroom and close the door. Run a bath or turn on the shower. Make sure the water is warm, but not too hot.
-
-
3
Place your dog in the bathtub and begin to wet his fur. If the dog is constantly trying to escape, consider purchasing restraints from your local pet store.
-
4
Shampoo the dog's fur using a gentle shampoo intended for use on dogs. Massage it into the dog's skin, working it into a lather, until the dog's whole body has been covered.
-
5
Rinse the dog thoroughly, making sure no traces of shampoo remain on his skin.
-
6
Remove the dog from the bath tub and towel him dry.
-
7
Use a pet dryer or a blow dryer on the coolest setting to dry your dog. Blow dry your dog thoroughly until his fur is completely dry.

Tips & Warnings
If your dog is not used to baths, introduce the idea gently and slowly, and give the dog plenty of treats for calm behavior.
Wear old clothing or underwear when bathing your dog, as you will likely get wet and dirty.
Blow dryers can be scary to dogs that are not used to them. If your dog shows any signs of distress, such as panting, whining or submissive behavior, such as putting his tail between his legs, get the dog gradually used to the idea before using the blow dryer on his fur.
