How to Identify Old French Coins

For coin enthusiasts, identifying old French coins is a sport and an enjoyable endeavor that yields great pride. Collecting a piece of history, from a country rich in character, turmoil and artistic grandeur, can be fulfilling for anyone who is entertained by culture. French coins have distinctive qualities that may stand out to the trained eye, however, to someone new to collecting, these differences must be learned to clearly identify French memorabilia.

1. Examine the writing on the outer edge and reverse side of the coin. The Napoleon IV 5 franc from 1874 clearly states Napoleon's name on the left side of the bust. Notice the Charles X coin from 1825. This 5 franc coin has "Charles X Rot" inscribed on the left side of the bust and "De France" on the right side.

2. Notice the orientation and features of the bust printed on the French coin. The 5 franc coin of Louis Philippe from 1847 depicts an older image of Louis Philippe with a weak chin and weathered eyes. The bust faces the right. See the three statues of the second republic coin from 1849. The male figure stands between two women dressed in robes depicting gods and goddesses.

3. Evaluate the coloring of the French coin. See the bright silver coloring of the 1814 Louis 18th French coin. View the 10 centemes coin of Napoleon III circa 1853. This brass-toned coin has a particular golden hue that is often found worn due to its age. Examine the Napoleon III 1868 coin of 20 francs to see the shiny golden tone. This small coin is heavy because it's nearly all bullion.
