How to Prevent Yellow Underarm Stains

How to Prevent Yellow Underarm Stains thumbnail
Nothing ruins white clothes like yellow underarm stains.

Nothing seems to ruin white clothing as quickly as yellow underarm stains. Not only are armpit stains unsightly, but they are also nearly impossible to remove. Prevention is the best solution. Underarm stains are formed when the acids in antiperspirant react with sweat. By interfering with this reaction, you can keep your light clothing pristine--even under the arms. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • Non-aluminum antiperspirant
  • Tank tops

Instructions

    • 1

Replace your antiperspirant with one that contains less aluminum chloride--or no aluminum at all. Aluminum is commonly used to inhibit perspiration, but causes eventual yellowing of light fabric. Many natural foods stores carry antiperspirants with less acidic sweat-inhibitors, like lichen.

    • 2

Apply antiperspirant correctly to prevent underarm stains. Apply a thin layer of antiperspirant before you put on your shirt or top. Let your armpits dry fully before getting dressed, especially if you're using a gel antiperspirant. This will reduce contact with your clothing.

    • 3

Create a barrier between your clothing and your armpits, if possible. For instance, wear an inexpensive tank top under light-colored shirts. The undergarment will absorb perspiration and keep your outer layer dry.

    • 4

Treat perspiration stains immediately. Rinse the underarm area with cold water to remove antiperspirant residue. Launder the white shirt in warm water and hang it up to dry.

Tips & Warnings

  • Those who sweat excessively might benefit from garment shields--thin cotton pads that can be worn under the arms to protect clothing. Garment shields are available at many drugstores.

  • Heat can exacerbate the yellow color of underarm stains. Instead of using a dryer, try line drying your white clothes. The sun will have a bleaching effect on the stains.
