How Can I Fix My Laptop From Restarting Windows & Not Booting XP?

If your laptop computer is failing to boot into your operating system when it restarts, this is a sign that there is a problem with your BIOS. The term BIOS is short for "basic input and output system," and refers to the primary program on your machine. If your BIOS is set to boot off of another device, that would explain why Windows XP isn't loading on startup. A simple adjustment of settings will correct this problem.

Instructions

    • 1

      Restart your laptop computer.

    • 2

Strike the key on your laptop computer's keyboard that you need to press to enter your computer's BIOS. This key will be labeled on screen as soon as your computer monitor turns back on. If you do not know which key you need to press, consult the chart in the "Resource" section of this article.

Use the arrow keys on your computer's keyboard to highlight the "Boot" option in your BIOS. Select it with the "Enter" key.

    • 4

Change the value listed under the "Primary Boot Device" menu option to read the name of your computer's hard drive. Your hard drive is where Windows XP is installed, and if your computer is restarting and not booting into Windows, your BIOS is not set up to boot off of your hard drive.

Select the "Save Changes and Exit" option. Your laptop computer will restart automatically. When it does, it will now boot off of your computer's primary hard drive and load Windows XP.
