How to Rent a Van for a Wheelchair

Many large rental agencies have chapters across the country with agents whose full-time job is to rent handle wheelchair-accessible vans and other vehicles. To avoid trip-related stress, plan in advance and locate wheelchair-friendly accommodations and restaurants. Wheelchair van rental companies have flexible terms, allowing you to rent for one day or a week.

Schedule your trip in advance. This is the best way to ensure you'll get an accessible van for the time you need. Go over your trip plans and estimate how long you need to rent the van for. Is it for an afternoon or do you need it overnight? Do you want to rent the van for a week?

Call companies that specialize in accessible van rentals (see Resources). Some companies will deliver the van to your house, to your business or to the airport where you're arriving. Ask each company what their current rates and delivery policies are, and whether they have vans available during your time frame.

    • 3

Check nationwide car rental companies (see Resources). The Oklahoma Department of Rehabilitation Services provides a list of the major car rental companies that provide service for wheelchair users. Major car rental companies will require advance notice of your need, since they don't deal with wheelchair customers every day. If you can't find a wheelchair accessible van near you, this can be a good solution.

    • 4

Contact your insurance company and check to see if you have rental car coverage. If not, you will need to purchase this. Most wheelchair van rental companies won't offer you insurance coverage.

    • 5

Book a wheelchair van rental from one of the major car rental companies or a company specializing in wheelchair van rental. Choose a company that offers reasonable rates for the time period you need the van, and one that offers a convenient delivery option. Finalize your rental arrangement and pay the deposit with a credit card to hold your rental.
